Astor is a small town on the edge of the Ocala National Forest in Central Florida. Its only relevance seems to be its location on the St. John’s River and its proximity to Silver Glen springs. My first time in Astor was for an early morning underwater photo shoot at Silver Glen. The pics came out great and our lunch at a restaurant on the river nearby was a great way to end a short Saturday day trip. Another visit a year later was equally as fun with a slightly more crowded spring but still an unforgettable time.
Almost two years later as I was thinking about a fun weekend trip with my friend Dana. Astor came to mind. Dana was moving to NYC, so we decided to do a real redneck Florida weekend and stay at “Blair’s Jungle Den” in Astor and go to the springs during the day.
Astor didn’t disappoint. The first night we found ourselves hanging out in a trailer park drinking some Apple Pie Moonshine with a crew of rowdy locals. The moonshine had taken a week to make and somehow really did taste exactly like apple pie. Dana and I hung in there drinking with the locals as long as we could before one of them insisted we go back to his trailer and check out his trike. In retrospect I wish I wouldn’t have had so much of that moonshine or I would’ve remembered all the amazing sayings that were coming out of these guys’ mouths. After three successful trips, I figured Astor held its own among quirky Florida towns and deserved its own journal entry.
